Tarryall Land & Cattle Ranch

A restored tailwater. A quiet Colorado escape

Tarryall Land & Cattle Ranch offers anglers a rare and highly sought-after opportunity to experience private fly fishing water on the renowned Tarryall Creek, located just about an hour from Colorado Springs. Conveniently accessible yet wonderfully secluded, the ranch delivers the perfect balance of comfort and escape. From the moment you arrive, the noise of everyday life gives way to the quiet rhythm of moving water, open skies, and the rugged beauty of the Colorado Rockies. It is the kind of place that feels undiscovered—where space, solitude, and pristine surroundings create an atmosphere that invites you to slow down and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Our stretch of the creek is typically clear, calm, and remarkably easy to read, making it ideal for anglers who appreciate both strategy and visual engagement. Here, you can often watch trout confidently feed along the surface or subtly glide into position beneath a well-presented fly—moments that transform fishing into something far more intentional and rewarding. Whether you are refining your technique or enjoying the simple thrill of a rising fish, the transparency of the water fosters a deeper connection between angler and environment.

Tarryall Land & Cattle Ranch

A History of Restoration and Stewardship

A carefully restored tailwater offering healthy flows and thriving trout.

The exceptional fishing on the Tarryall Creek didn’t happen by accident. In the mid-2000s, the ranch became the focus of a major riparian and stream restoration effort aimed at reversing years of degradation caused by overgrazing and unstable banks.

In 2004, a large-scale restoration project was completed with funding support from the Park County Land & Water Trust Fund. The work included reshaping the stream channel, rebuilding damaged banks, and installing in-stream structures such as rock veins to improve grade control and fish habitat. These changes dramatically improved channel stability, water flow, and holding water for trout.

Thousands of willows and sod were planted along the banks to further stabilize the stream and restore natural vegetation. To protect these improvements for the long term, grazing and mowing were eliminated from the restored reach. Today, the results are clear in the form of healthier trout, improved stream function, and a resilient ecosystem that continues to thrive.

Tarryall Land & Cattle Ranch

A Natural, Unfiltered Experience

Tarryall Land & Cattle Ranch is intentionally simple and undeveloped, offering a setting that reflects the raw beauty of Colorado’s high country. There are no bathrooms or sanitary facilities on the property, allowing the land to remain undisturbed and true to its natural character. Guests are encouraged to plan ahead for their comfort and needs. The closest public restrooms are located at Tarryall Reservoir, and the small town of Jefferson is just a short drive away for fuel, food, and last-minute supplies.

The open landscape provides breathtaking, uninterrupted views in every direction, but it also means there is very little natural shelter. Conditions can shift quickly in the mountains — sunny mornings may give way to afternoon winds or sudden storms. Weather awareness is essential, particularly during the summer months when lightning can pose a serious risk in exposed areas. Checking forecasts, bringing proper layers, and knowing when to step off the water are all part of fishing responsibly in this environment.

This simplicity is not a limitation; it is part of the ranch’s identity. By keeping the property natural and lightly touched, we protect the health of the creek, the surrounding habitat, and the sense of solitude that anglers seek when they venture here. There are no crowds, no noise, and no unnecessary distractions — just moving water, open sky, and the rhythm of the cast.
